“Ghostly Tales of Japan” was written almost exclusively in coffee shops dotted around Tokyo. My working day is long, but contains dead time between jobs which I used to write the stories in the book. Independent traditional coffee shops, unlike multinational chains with their overbearing muzak, are quiet oases, ideal for gathering your thoughts. When I did find myself in a nosier environment, I would listen to an album called Koto Music of Japan on my iPod while writing. It was particularly effect background music for the writing of the stories in the “Tales of Olden Days” section of the book. You can hear the album on YouTube.
